Warren father killed in Florida, family seeks answers
TAMPA, Fl. - A family in Warren is heartbroken and searching for answers after their loved one was shot and killed while working out of state.
Darnell Owens, a 49-year-old man, with seven children and six grandchildren, had traveled from Warren to Tampa, Florida, with the construction company RJB to remodel restrooms at Lowe's.
However, on June 22, just one day before he was scheduled to return home, he was tragically shot and killed around 3 AM.
His sister, Tammy Jethroe, said she spoke with him every day while he was there, including the night before he was shot.
"He called me every day. The last time I talked to him was Saturday night." Jethroe said.
Tampa police say a man in his 30's called 911 claiming he had shot another man [Owens] after feeling threatened.
When police arrived on the scene, they found that man still there, holding a gun. He is in custody, but so far, no charges have been filed.
Jethroe stated that police told her that Owens was not armed.
"The detective was just as lost as I am, because he's like... 'All we found on him was a wallet, his wallet and his phone,' and [with] his ID [they were] able to trace back to Ohio, where they were able to inform Warren [police department]." Jethroe told 21 News.
As the family waits for more answers, Jethro said they are doing their best to cope with the loss, but the pain is deepening.
"This is the person that walked up and made everybody laugh. Even when you're in a bad mood, he'll make you laugh." Jethroe said.
The family has now launched a GoFundMe hoping to raise the money so Darnell can be laid to rest with dignity.
