MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio - Seventeen-year-old Audrey Anderson is an honors student at Cardinal Mooney, but outside of school, she is leading something pretty special. She started a crochet and knitting club that meets at the Public Library of Youngstown.

The club is called "Hooked on Hope." During their first meeting, the group created baby blankets and stuffed animals. Audrey said the goal is to create handmade items for kids at Akron Children's Hospital.

"To be able to crochet something and spend hours working on it, to give it to someone else, I think, has just as equal as an impact as volunteering as at a food bank.." Anderson said.

Her passion for making a difference in the community goes beyond crocheting.

The high school senior wants to put her American Sign Language skills to good use by helping kids in the Valley who are hearing impaired.

"There's deaf people, no matter where you go. Youngstown's deaf community. It isn't the biggest, which makes sense, but there's still opportunities for outreach." Anderson told 21 News reporter Leslie Huff.

Whether through her yarn crafts or sign language skills, , the 17-year-old is dedicated to using her talents to brighten someone else's world.

When asked where she sees herself in ten years, her answer came easily.

Audrey says her crochet and knitting club will meet every other week. The next meeting will be July 17 at the Main Library in Youngstown in room 205.

"Ten years from now, I still see myself in school, still learning. It's never something that's going to stop. And still creating things to help people." Anderson said.
