 2000: Alcoa Aluminum, the world's largest aluminum producer, has purchased Excel Extrusions in Warren. 

Episcopal Church leaders approve a historic alliance with the Evangelical Lutheran Church, the nation's largest Lutheran denomination. 

Youngstown City Council allocates $125,000 to raze unused school buildings in the city. 

 

1985: Columbiana County commissioners unanimously approve a 1 percent sales tax and say they will vigorously defend it if an attempt to repeal it is organized. 

Grandstand entertainment at the 139th Canfield Fair will include the "Golden Boys of American Bandstand" (Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell, and Fabian), as well as comedian Red Skelton and country singer Willie Nelson.

The Trumbull County Fair closes its six-day run with a record attendance of 115,744 people. 

 

1975: A special grand jury in Mercer County recommends that five Pennsylvania Department of Transportation personnel be indicted on charges of extortion and bribery. 

A fire in the tire and foam storage building at General Motors' Lordstown plant idles about 1,250 employees on the van assembly line. 

Former Gov. Ronald Reagan of California says he plans to challenge President Gerald Ford for the 1976 Republican presidential nomination. 

 

1950: President Truman names Gen. Douglas MacArthur commanding general of United Nations forces in Korea. 

An "over the Erie" parking structure big enough to hold 2,250 cars is entirely practical and could pay for itself, a Baltimore engineering firm reports. 

Msgr. Elias Risha, archbishop of Boalbeck, Lebanon, visits St. Maron Church. He also visited  Bishop James McFadden, who is in St. Elizabeth Hospital, recuperating from surgery.
