Youngstown officials remind parents of curfew for juveniles in city
Officials in Youngstown held a press conference to educate parents on the city's juvenile curfew.
The City of Youngstown is enforcing a curfew nightly between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. prohibiting juveniles under the age of 18 from being in city limits without a parent or legal guardian with them.
Youngstown Mayor Tito Brown says this curfew is not anything new for the city, but with a recent curfew arrest in the city, as well as more summer events and recent instances in youth violence in the city, Mayor Brown is reminding parents to make sure their children are home or with an adult when they're supposed to be.
There are exceptions for minors with work permits who are coming home during curfew enforcement hours.
Mayor Brown says the city will work to hold parents accountable if their child violates curfew, but he is also willing to work with parents who are willing to work with their kids to prevent repeat offenses.
"If we can see the parents are willing to be a participant of this and not just saying, 'Hey, it's your problem, city or juvenile,' then we'll work with them," Brown said.
Gina DeGenova with the Mahoning County Juvenile Court says the Juvenile Court has resources available for families who need them including mental health and drug and alcohol services.
"We've got a lot of resources within our court system that can assist some parents. Sometimes they're overwhelmed, sometimes they just need some assistance or some education. And we're willing and able to do that once their within our jurisdiction," DeGenova said.
