Mahoning Valley & U.S. - Valley residents may notice their trash pickup services stalled as Republic Services sanitation employees go on strike.

Protestors set up a picket line outside the Republic Services Carbon Limestone Landfill in Lowellville and began to fight for a "fair contract."

This is part of a nation wide strike against the company with union representatives going on strike in Los Angeles, Boston and now Youngstown.

"They're very reasonable, they're only asking to be paid the same as other trash companies in the same area and they're not asking anything I don't think Republic can come to the table and agree on," says Boston City Councilor Erin Murphy.

The Carbon Limestone Landfill in particular represents a critical piece of sanitation infrastructure.

Trash from not only the surrounding area, but New York City and New Jersey all comes to Youngstown to be deposited.

Now with the landfill operations stalled over 12 million pounds of trash per day is piling up on trucks and trains that don't have the staff to be unloaded according to the Republic Services Teamsters.

"The American public needs to understand that Republic Services and its overpaid, corrupt executives own this strike. Their
greed is forcing trash collectors and waste haulers across the country out into the street. We don't want this garbage piling up. We want to return to work. But we refuse to be exploited," says Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien.

Over 2,000 Republic Services Teamsters are either part of the strike or respecting their picket lines.
