Columbiana man accused of breaking into state representative's home
NEW WATERFORD, Ohio - A Columbiana man has been arrested after allegedly breaking into the home of a local state representative.
According to a complaint filed in the Columbiana County Municipal Court, deputies with the Columbiana County Sheriff's Office were called to a home on Hatcher Road on Tuesday, July 15 for a burglary in progress.
Voting records show that this is the home of 79th District Representative Monica Robb-Blasdel, as well as 7th District Court of Appeals Judge Carol Robb and former State Representative Chuck Blasdel.
Deputies say the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Nathan Johnson, took a wooden chair and used it to break through a glass door to get into the home.
Johnson then allegedly stole a cell phone from someone in the home when he tried to call 911 and fled the scene with the phone.
21 News obtained the 911 audio, where you can hear what appears to be Johnson telling police to come to Carol Robb's house after alleging they "took" his "fiancé."
However, it's unclear what Johnson meant by this and what exactly is behind the motive.
In a statement released to 21 News, Robb-Blasdel commended local law enforcement for their response to the incident and said everyone in her family is safe.
Columbiana County Sheriff Brian McLaughlin tells 21 News this attack was not politically motivated, but Johnson and Robb-Blasdel had previously met. McLaughlin also alleges that Johnson gave a full confession to these crimes.
According to court records, Johnson is charged with one count each of burglary and disrupting public services. He was arraigned Thursday morning and his bond was set at $500,000. He was also ordered to have no contact with the victims or government entities.
Johnson is due back in court Thursday, July 24.
21 News has asked the Sheriff's office for more information and will update as more information becomes available.
