CAMPBELL, Ohio - A Campbell Municipal Court judge's bailiff and former Campbell Fire Chief was arrested early Sunday morning on drug charges.

According to a report, 70-year-old David Horvath was stopped in his vehicle by police after swerving on the road near Wilson Avenue and Coitsville Road in Campbell.

Horvath stated he swerved to avoid driving over a pothole in the road.

An officer asked Horvath to exit his vehicle to conduct a K9 free air sniff of the car's exterior.

The K9 Ranger was able to detect cocaine inside the vehicle, and officers were able to obtain it as evidence.

While the Ranger continued its search, an officer patted down Horvath and could feel a cut straw in his front pocket. Upon asking to remove the item from his pocket, Police say Horvath refused. He later said he used the straw to ingest his nasal medication, according to the report.

Horvath was booked into Mahoning County Jail on possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Police say he had $66 worth of cocaine.

Horvath is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, July 22, at 9 a.m. in Campbell Municipal Court.

His position as a court bailiff is currently suspended pending legal matters according to Dawn Pesa, the Clerk of Courts.

Horvath served as the city's fire chief from March of 1996 to October of 2002 when he returned to his role as a Captain until he retired in 2013.
