Sharon babysitter charged after 8-year-old found on freeway

SHARON A Sharon woman faces charges of endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment after police say an 8-year-old she was supposed to be babysitting was found wandering alone on a four-lane freeway.
Sharon City Police arrested Cheyenne Brown, 26, of Ravine Place, after the child, identified only as J.R. due to his age, was spotted by an officer on the Shenango Valley Freeway/South Sharpsville Avenue bridge.
According to a criminal complaint, an officer found the boy standing on the bridge after 5 p.m. on July 6. With the child's help, police located an aunt who took temporary custody of the boy.
Police then contacted the child's mother, who provided information about Brown, the babysitter. Police spoke with Brown, who told police she was "unaware” that any children were missing.
The complaint states that Brown last saw J.R. inside her home. The child was in police custody or with another adult for about 37 minutes. Using Google Maps, Officer Grace determined that the path from Brown's residence to where the child was found was between 0.8 and 1 mile, which would take an average person 17 to 22 minutes to walk directly. This means the child was unsupervised for at least 54 to 59 minutes, according to the criminal complaint.
Given the child's age, the length of time he was missing, and the dangerous location where he was found, authorities concluded there was a substantial risk of serious bodily injury due to a lack of supervision and protection by Brown.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 15 at 9:45 a.m.
