EAST PALESTINE, Ohio - Norfolk Southern Corp. and Union Pacific Corp. confirmed today they are engaged in advanced discussions regarding a potential business combination.

The rail giants issued a joint statement acknowledging the talks but offered no assurances that an agreement would be reached or on what terms any such transaction would occur.

Both companies stated they do not intend to comment further or provide updates on the matter unless disclosure is legally required or deemed appropriate.

It was a Norfolk Southern train involved in a fiery derailment and chemical spill in February 2023 in East Palestine, which continues to be subject to litigation today.

Norfolk Southern operates a freight transportation network across 22 states, handling about 7 million carloads annually.
