As of this week, Trumbull County MetroParks is in the second stage of the Leavittsburg Dam removal project.

The dam has been hotly contested by Warren Township residents, trustees and employees for years. As of June, however, Warren trustees unanimously voted to cease their fight with Trumbull MetroParks and step aside, allowing the removal process to begin.

Trumbull County MetroParks Executive Director Zachary Svette told 21 News that there are three key stages for the removal. MetroParks is currently working to remove sediment around the dam by dredging the area. This step can help minimize any downstream impacts following removal. The dredging process is projected to take roughly 50 days and should conclude by September 8, Svette said.

Barring any weather or equipment delays, Svette said the Leavittsburg Dam will be fully removed from the Mahoning River in September.
