Canfield group home caregiver sentenced for putting cigarette out on patient

CANFIELD, Ohio - CANFIELD A Mahoning County judge handed down sentencing to a group home caregiver accused of putting out a cigarette on a patient's arm.
According to a police report from June of last year, the patient was smoking a cigarette outside a group home on Skyline Drive in Canfield.
The report states that employee Banjo Adebayo Akande, 37, pulled up to the group home in his car, got out, and yelled at the patient for smoking. Akande allegedly took the cigarette from the patient and put it out on the patient's arm. Police say this left a burn mark on the patient.
The report says Akande then asked the patient, "did that hurt?" The patient responded that it did. A supervisor told police that when she confronted Akande about the incident, Akande did not deny that it happened and told her that the patient should not have been smoking.
Police contacted Akande in July of last year. Police say Akande admitted to putting the cigarette out on the patient's arm, claiming he did so as a joke.
The Grand Jury found enough evidence to indict Akande on one count of patient abuse and one count of assault, both fourth degree felonies.
Akande was sentenced to six months and 60 days, which were suspended. One year of probation, and 48 hours of community service.
