CLEVELAND, Ohio - According to a news release from the United States Attorney's Office in the Northern District of Ohio, a Warren native has taken the oath to serve as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.

David M. Toepfer of Warren took the oath of office on Thursday.

According to the release, Toepfer is now the "top-ranking federal law enforcement official for the district."

Toepfer will represent the United States in all federal and civil litigation in the Northern District of Ohio.

Chief U.S. District Judge Sara Lioi swore in Toepfer at the U.S. Courthouse in Akron following the July 23 appointment by U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi.

Toepfer's appointment marks the first time in more than 117 years that a Youngstown-area lawyer will serve as the United States Attorney for the district.

President Donald Trump nominated Toepfer for the position in July, according to the release. His nomination remains pending in the United States Senate.

"It is the honor of a lifetime to serve the people of Northern Ohio in this role. Our office will continue working with our federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to protect the public by aggressively enforcing the laws of the United States," said United States Attorney Toepfer.

Toepfer continued," I am thankful for the trust President Trump and Attorney General Bondi have placed in me, and for the support of Senators Moreno and Husted as the confirmation process proceeds through the Senate."

The Northern Ohio district encompasses the 40 northern-most counties in the state, home to nearly six milion people.

The U.S. Attorney's Office operates from its main headquarters in Cleveland, but there are additional branches in Akron, Toledo and Youngstown.

Toepfer will lead a staff of nearly 200 attorneys and other support personnel.

Within the release, several of Toepfer's prior positions are included.

In 2008, Toepfer joined the Northern District of Ohio as an Assistant United States Attorney at the Youngstown branch.

Most recently, he has served as branch chief at the Youngstown and Akron offices, according to the release.

Before joining the U.S. Attorney's Office, Toepfer served for nine years as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Trumbull County.

Additionally, he served for two years as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Portage County.

It is noted in the release that Toepfer graduated magna cum laude from Youngstown State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, majoring in accounting.

He also holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Akron School of Law.
