Sword wielding suspect leads to closure of Youngstown's west side library

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - An incident at the Michael Kusabala branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) led to the site's closure Friday.
According to a police report, a man entered the branch on Mahoning Avenue brandishing a sword and verbally threatened patrons and staff members when asked to leave.
Staff members moved occupants to a safe space when the man entered a restroom and locked the door.
Youngstown police were called and worked to disarm the suspect, who eventually left the branch on his own.
The same man was later seen at the Main library branch on Wick Avenue where he was taken into custody.
PLYMC has decided to close the Michael Kusabala branch for the remainder of Friday and will reopen Tuesday, July 29.
The days off will be used for service training and support for library staff.
"Our branch staff and security personnel acted commendably in a very tense and potentially dangerous situation. I am incredibly proud of our team for their exemplary response," said PLYMC Director and CEO Aimee Fifarek.
All other branches will remain open as normal.
