4th annual Camp Courage supports children in grief

HERMITAGE, Pa. - One in 14 children lose a parent or sibling before they turn 18, according to the American Psychological Association.
Camp Courage, hosted by the Buhl Regional Health Foundation (BRHF) works to support children who are grieving loved ones and teach them how to process the loss.
"Grief can feel incredibly isolating for a child," Kateri Linn, BRHF's director of programming said, "Especially when they don't know anyone else
going through it."
Located at Buhl Park, the free, week-long camp will allow children to connect with others who are grieving and build a path toward "emotional resilience" BRHF said in a statement. Participants will take part in both therapeutic and creative activities over the course of the program.
"These deaths can forever change a child if we don't allow them the opportunity to express their grief," Kristie Nosich, a licensed professional counselor said in a statement to BRHF.
Licensed counselors, as well as local volunteers, will be leading the children through the camp's activities, including animal therapy, resilience obstacle courses, improv dance sessions, nature therapy and traditional talk therapy.
Through the program, BRHF said that they hope to empower children going through difficult losses to utilize the coping skills and connections that they learn at Camp Courage throughout their daily lives.
The camp runs July 28 through August 1, and more information can be found at BRHF's website.
