2000: Andrew Cuomo, secretary of Housing and Urban Development, denies saying that the Mahoning Valley wouldn't receive a federal empowerment zone designation until U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant is gone.
CiviGenics Inc. of Milford, Mass., is returning responsibility for operating the Columbiana County Jail to the county, effective August 11, because the company hasn't been paid for its services since April. CiviGenics took over operation of the jail from the sheriff's department in December 1997.
Nancy Lopez, who won the inaugural Giant Eagle LPGA Classic at Avalon Lakes in 1993, is back for this year's tournament, despite knee surgery in 1999 and the removal of her gall bladder three months ago.
1985: U.S. House Majority Leader Jim Wright, D-Texas, and U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr., hold a press conference at the VIP Entertainment Center in Niles, where they vow to block any attempt by President Reagan and Republicans to tamper with Social Security to reduce the budget deficit.
Niles Municipal Court Judge Charles Zubyk returns from a trip with 100 lawyers to the Soviet Union, where they studied the civil and criminal justice system -- and found it wanting.
Children and leaders from 13 different countries are at the Camp Fire Council's Camp Kiwatani in Ellsworth for the 23rd Children's International Summer Village. The campers are from Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Denmark, Finland, Great Britain, Guatemala, Jordan, Mexico, Norway, South Korea, Sweden, and the United States.
1975: A bill requiring state and local bodies to conduct business at meetings open to the public passes the Ohio House, 86-7.

1950: There is no scarcity of sugar in Youngstown. A reporter sent to investigate reports of empty shelves and soaring prices returns with 20 pounds of sugar after visiting 10 stores and finding prices ranging from 10 cents to 17 cents a pound.
Brainard Rivet Co. purchases the plant and property of the A.H. Stringer Co. in Girard and will increase its production of steel rivets with a move from Warren to the Girard site.
Joe Louis, retired heavyweight boxing champ, says he will try to regain his title because he needs money to pay back taxes.
