Youngstown Area Jewish Federation giving first look to new middle school

YOUNGSTOWN On Monday, the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation gave its first look of the new Altshuler Akiva Academy, Goldstone-Mirkin Family Middle School.
The new middle school can be found at the Suzi Solomon Campus located at 520 Gypsy Lane in Youngstown, the site of the former Allen's PharmaServe building.
The groundbreaking on the school began in March of 2025, marking the start of the $1.5 million expansion.
The school will hold grades five through eight, and features four classrooms, office spaces and a multipurpose area designed for Shabbat services.
With this new addition, the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation will be able to double its enrollment.
"With this expansion, we'll be able to double our enrollment at the Akiva Academy, which is a K-8 day school, in the next five years," said Lisa Long, CEO of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation.
Long told 21 News that the goal of new school is to give students an excellent blended secular and Jewish education.
"What's really interesting is that out of the one hundred and eighty six students we currently have, only twenty are Jewish. So, fo rus at the Federation, its a wonderful way of fighting anti-semitism and teaching about Israel in a really pivitol time in our history," said Long.
Long also told 21 News that the goal of finishing the school is about $700,000 away.
Anyone looking to donate to the school expansion project can do so through the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation website or by calling 330-746-3250.
The Federation expects the school to be open in the beginning of 2026.
