WARREN, Ohio - Department heads in Trumbull County are requesting hundreds of thousands of additional funds to stay afloat until the end of the year.

Places where funds are desperately needed are the Municipal Court, Facilities, Recorder, Auditor, and Board of Elections offices. The total request for all the departments is more than $1.7 million.

  • Municipal Court: $115,000
  • Facilities: $891,000
  • Recorder: $140,000
  • Auditor: $293,000
  • Board of Elections: $257,000

Its a number of the commissioners are confident they’ll meet because they have extra money.

“Our sales tax is up from what was anticipated at the beginning of the year. People are shopping in Trumbull County more and that's a big portion of our general fund,” Commissioner Denny Malloy said. “Just last month we were up four hundred thousand dollars.”

Auditor Marth Yoder warned the commissioner at Wednesday's meeting that if they don't get the amount they requested the entire office will be laid off come October 1st.

At least one commissioner is vowing that no layoffs in the county will have to happen this year because of budget issues.

“Moving forward we’re going to be okay and we will until the end of the year be able to suffice all of our departments with the monies that they need to operate,” Commissioner Rick Hernandez said. “We found that the departments have done their due diligence.”

Most departments received less funding than usual this year and the commissioners warned that everyone needed to cut back on overtime and any excess spending.

Commissioners say they will give out some money and can dip into the emergency reserves if they have to.

“If we give the departments what they need to carry on I think you're going to see a morale boost with the employees and I think they're going to do far and above what they would normally do,” Commissioner Tony Bernard said.

The commissioners did not make any commitment to give out more yet but they say they will give all five departments an update on Tuesday.
