Grand jury indicts Canfield man for Route 224 crash

BOARDMAN The Mahoning County Grand Jury has indicted a Canfield man on felony charges in connection with a March 2 traffic accident that injured another driver in Boardman.
Matthew Carleton Brocker, 36, of Canfield, was indicted Thursday on two counts of felonious assault, both second-degree felonies, and one count of vehicular assault, a fourth-degree felony, according to court records.
The charges stem from a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 224 in Boardman Township. The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that Brocker was driving a 2024 Toyota Camry when it struck a 2008 Nissan Sentra driven by Anthony Viviano, 54, of New Castle, Pennsylvania.
Witnesses told troopers that Brocker was speeding. The impact caused Viviano's vehicle to hit a curb and land on a sidewalk. Viviano was hospitalized with serious injuries.
Boardman police officers reported that Brocker, after the crash, exited his overturned car in an "aggressive manner" toward first responders, fled the scene on foot, and resisted arrest after a brief struggle.
Brocker was previously arraigned in Boardman Court on misdemeanor charges of obstructing official business and resisting arrest, to which he pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in March. A forensic examination was ordered at that time.
When Thursday’s indictment was issued, online lower court records did not show the outcome of that forensic examination.
A warrant has been issued for Brocker's arrest on the new charges.
