Brick-wielding suspect allegedly tells trooper 'shoot me' during Mercer County chase, assault

DELAWARE TWP., Pa. - A Conneautville, Pennsylvania, man is jailed on a host of charges after a series of alleged thefts, a high-speed police pursuit, and an assault on a State Police Trooper, during which the suspect allegedly urged police to shoot him.
Michael A. Chase, 36, was arraigned Tuesday on 10 charges, including felony aggravated assault, felony receiving stolen property, and felony fleeing or attempting to elude an officer. He is being held at Mercer County Prison on $250,000 bail.
According to a criminal complaint, state police received a bulletin around 11:45 a.m. Monday for a stolen black Ford Escape from the Meadville area. The suspect was described as a white male with dark hair and a beard. A state police helicopter was called in to assist with the search.
Police were subsequently dispatched to three separate incidents involving a man matching the suspect's description and driving a dark SUV who stole Gatorade and a water bottle from a Sheakleyville auto parts store.
The complaint also tells of a confrontation with a woman in Otter Creek Township.
The woman said she was sitting on the porch of her Linn Tyro Road home when a small black SUV parked on the road, partially blocking the end of her driveway.
A man fitting Chase’s description opened the passenger door of her SUV parked in the driveway. When she asked what he was doing, he told her, “I’m trying to steal your car.” The male then returned to his SUV and drove away, according to the complaint.
Police also believe Chase was the same man seen earlier in the day, rifling through a parked vehicle on Lake Road in Sandy Creek Township before being confronted by the owner.
At approximately 1:30 p.m., a Trooper saw a black Ford Escape entering District Road from Kremis Road. After confirming the vehicle matched the description of the stolen SUV, he began a pursuit which continued west on District Road.
Chase allegedly swerved into oncoming traffic twice, forcing other vehicles off the roadway to avoid a head-on collision. He also allegedly stopped abruptly in the lane of travel on two occasions, in an apparent attempt to cause the pursuing trooper to rear-end his vehicle, the complaint states.
The pursuit ended when Chase's vehicle drove through a field and into a yard before striking a telephone pole. Chase then allegedly fled on foot. During the foot pursuit, Chase repeatedly told the pursuing officers, "Shoot me."
While running through a backyard, Chase allegedly picked up a landscape brick and threw it at the pursuing trooper. As the trooper moved to avoid the brick, Chase allegedly lunged at him and tackled him to the ground. Striking his head and shoulder on the ground, the Trooper sustained a cut and scrape above his right eye, according to the complaint.
Police say Chase continued to resist before the Trooper and Pymatuning Township Police Chief Michael Brown were able to take him into custody.
While being transported to the state police barracks for an interview, Chase allegedly removed his seatbelt and repeatedly kicked the rear door of the patrol vehicle, causing an estimated $1,500 in damage. He was then taken directly to Mercer County Jail.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 18.
