Suspect killed in officer-involved shooting at Mercer County hotel identified
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. - We're getting more details on the events that led up to an officer-involved shooting at a Mercer County hotel Thursday afternoon.
According to a press release from Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), the Mercer County Sheriff's Office, as well as the Shenango Township Police Department were called to the Park Inn by Radisson to serve a warrant on a suspect.
Police say the suspect was armed and did not surrender himself to officers.
From there, SWAT units and a Crisis Intervention Response Team were called to the scene, and later in the afternoon. the coroner and a PSP forensic trooper vehicle also arrived.
The incident ultimately led to the suspect, identified as 46-year-old Tyrell Askerneese of Farrell being shot and killed by police. The coroner and a PSP forensic trooper arrived at the scene following the shooting.
At this time, the nature of Askerneese's warrant is unknown.
People staying at the hotel told 21 News the police presence had started off on the smaller side Thursday morning, but grown significantly by midday.
