LISBON A Columbiana man has been indicted on seven felony charges, including attempted murder and kidnapping, in connection with an alleged assault and arson on June 2.

The Columbiana County Grand Jury indicted Fredrick Harroff, 66, for allegedly strangling a family member and hitting her with a baseball bat. The victim was taken to a hospital for injuries that included bleeding from multiple wounds on her head and left elbow.

Harroff faces a total of seven felony charges: one count of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated arson, two counts of felonious assault, one count of kidnapping, and one count of strangulation.

According to a Columbiana Police Department report, the incident took place just before midnight at a mobile home park. The victim told police she was lying in bed when Harroff began hitting her with a baseball bat, punching her, and strangling her with a rope.

During the attack, Harroff allegedly threatened to kill her and burn the mobile home with her inside. Police found a bloody rope in a bedroom closet and blood on and around the bed.

Harroff is accused of setting fire to the home before fleeing. He suffered significant burns to his feet, hands, and face. A search of the home revealed a gas can nozzle on the kitchen floor and the can itself in a bedroom closet.

Outside, the gas meter appeared to have been sabotaged and was leaking gas. Officers and a K9 handler tracked Harroff to a nearby creek, where they found him covered in blood, mud, and soot. His burn wounds were so severe that the skin had peeled from the bottoms of his feet. He was flown to a burn unit for treatment.

Harroff has been held in the Columbiana County Jail on $500,000 bond since July 10.

His arraignment is scheduled for 1 p.m. on August 28 before Judge Scott Washam in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court.
