WARREN Warren Police are investigating separate cases of alleged child endangering after two different children, ages 5 and 6, were found unattended over the weekend.

In one case, a boy, said to be 5 or 6 years old, was found walking alone on Draper Street SE late Saturday morning. According to a police report, a passerby called 911 after seeing the child, who was wearing only shorts and no shoes, call out for his mother.

When police arrived, they found the boy standing inside the front door of his home, saying, "Mommy left!" Officers entered the residence and found it in a state of disarray, with trash, rotten food, and feces throughout the home.

A police report gave the following narrative describing what an officer saw:

Garbage throughout the residence, overwhelming odor of rotten food and feces, multiple flies and insects throughout, takeout containers in the fridge scattered around, rotten food items in the freezer, feces and urine on the toilet and the immediate area, filthy bedding in one of the rooms located on the North side of the residence, clothing throughout. No children's bed observed in the interior. Observing the above, it was determined that the residence is not an adequate environment for a child and/or any adults.

Trumbull County Children Services was called and took custody of the child. The report noted that the agency had previously received similar calls about the mother and her children.

According to the police report, the mother will be charged with child endangering.

In a separate incident on Friday night, police say a 5-year-old boy left his home on Glenwood Street NE and walked approximately a half mile to his father's workplace. The father told police that the boy arrived at his shop around 8 p.m. and said he didn't know where his mother was. A witness told the father that the boy had nearly been hit by cars twice while crossing Elm Road.

When the father returned home, he said he found his wife, Amber Bender, passed out on the couch "extremely intoxicated," according to the police report. When police questioned the wife, officers said she was slurring her words, and she smelled of alcohol. She was later arrested and charged with child endangering after attempting to leave the scene. She was transported to the Trumbull County Jail.

Bender is scheduled to appear before a judge on Monday to answer the charge.
