Portage County School District mourns loss of 8-year-old who died in Howland home

HOWLAND A Portage County school district is mourning the loss of the eight-year-old boy who died in a Howland Township home Monday evening.
Windham Exempted Village School District Superintendent Michael Dobrin tells 21 News eight-year-old Leonard "Lenny" Lee Roosa would have entered the third grade at Katherine Thomas Elementary School this year.
Both Lenny and his father 33-year-old Leonard James Roosa died in a home on the 5000 Block of Mines Road the evening of Monday, August 11. According to a call log, fire crews were not letting police into the home due to potential carbon monoxide inside.
No official cause of death was determined yet.
According to the call log, the two were working in the home, which had been vacant for a while.
Dobrin says Lenny's death was "a tragedy" and he was remembered by his teachers and peers as a "funny, kind and thoughtful kid."
Dobrin added that Roosa's cousin is also a student in the district and his aunt started a GoFundMe to help the family. So far, over $12,000 have been raised over the course of two days.
