When you turn on the faucet, the last thing you want is an odor coming from the water you're getting ready to consume or bathe in. However, that's been the story for people who live in Warren and nearby like Lordstown, Leavittsburg, Champion and Howland. So what's causing the issue?

"The high temperatures that we've been experiencing, what that has done is it has raised the temperature of the lake water at Mosquito Lake to record highs this year," Franco Lucarelli, director of utilities at the Warren water department said.

When the heat picks up algae breaks down in the water causing the water department to have to clear the system and It takes chemicals like chlorine to get the job done.

"You have to flush the lines out in this particular case when the water's this warm and in the city of Warren we're also monitoring the chlorine residuals to make sure that the water quality across the distribution stays as it should be," Lucarelli said.

Lucarelli adds, the water department does this testing every half hour and the issue shouldn't last long.

"It's generally an easier fix and soon as the temperatures start to subside a little bit, this issue will go away," he said.

In the meantime, if you find yourself inconvenienced by this, you can run your cold water for a while to help run out the smell and taste.

"If they call our hotline at 330-841-2531 during working hours and after hours if they call 330-841-2572, we'll promptly send out a crew to flush a hydrant in the neighborhood," Lucarelli said.
