NEWTON FALLS, Ohio - In Newton Falls, a routine post about bus routes ended up revealing more than the district intended.

As families in the village get ready for the new school year, they found far more than just bus routes published by the district in a public Facebook community group for Newton Falls.

A file was inadvertently uploaded with personal information for hundreds of students. It contained students' names, their addresses, parental phone numbers, and emergency contacts.

Superintendent Andreas Johansson downplayed the seriousness of the leak and insists no one's safety was compromised.

"There was no sensitive student data in there. As soon as we became aware that was publicly accessible, we removed that file," Johansson said.

Johansson mentioned that the district removed the file after seeing a Facebook post from a user in the group.

The district did not inform families of the leak, and it is only coming to light after a concerned parent brought it to 21 News' attention.

When asked about concerns that student data could end up in the wrong hands--even on the dark web--the superintendent's advice was for parents to keep accounts secure.

"You should always take steps to make sure that your children's data is as safe and secure as you can. I would highly recommend that you use two-factor authentication on apps like Facebook or social media and make sure that you know where your students' data goes," Johansson said.

The superintendent said new safeguards are being put in place to keep this from happening again.

"Going forward, we'll post more like the raw files, as opposed to sharing a folder. We'll just post them to our website in a manner that it's sort of a more one-way," Johansson said.
