YOUNGSTOWN  Youngstown Police say a routine traffic stop early Friday led to the discovery of 13 bags of crack cocaine and the arrest of a suspect wanted on federal drug charges.

Officers pulled over a Kia Sorento at West LaClede Avenue and Hillman Street just after midnight because the driver allegedly ran a stop sign.

Officers say the driver allowed them to conduct a search inside the car, during which officers say they found a bookbag containing a heavy object.

According to the police report, the officer found a “large, heavy” plastic bag containing thirteen individual bags of crack cocaine.

Police say a passenger in the car, 36-year-old Darrian Brooks of Youngstown, admitted that the drugs belonged to him.

Brooks was arrested for possession of crack cocaine and for an extradition warrant from Pennsylvania for “dangerous drugs.” He was taken to the Mahoning County Jail.

Brooks is wanted by federal authorities in Pittsburgh on an indictment charging him with possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm used in furtherance of drug trafficking. Court records show Brooks has previous drug convictions in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, and Oklahoma.

The driver of the car was issued a warning and released.
