Warren Police: Grandfather with cane injured during family melee, two arrested

WARREN Police have charged a Warren man and his girlfriend after her father was allegedly shoved to the ground and injured during a family argument, according to a police report.
Police were dispatched to a home on Forest Street NE for a report of a domestic disturbance around 9 p.m. Thursday.
The alleged victim told police his daughter’s boyfriend, John Daniel III, 30, pushed him to the ground, causing him to hit his head on the sidewalk. The man, who walks with a cane, suffered a laceration to his forehead and cuts on his chin. He was taken to a hospital where the laceration was glued shut. Police redacted the man’s age from their report.
The man told police that his daughter, 32-year-old Mary Banks, and Daniel had been arguing all day. The argument escalated outside, at which point Banks' father told Daniel to leave his property. The man said Daniel got in his face and shoved him.
The man's wife told police she grabbed a baseball bat and swung it at Daniel after he pushed her husband. She said she feared Daniel would severely hurt her husband due to his inability to walk without a cane.
The wife said that Daniel then grabbed her hair and punched her in the face. Other family members, including Mary Banks’ 15-year-old son and another woman, also told police that Daniel struck them while they tried to intervene.
Daniel, who had a laceration on the left side of his head, told police the wife hit him with a bat because she thought he had shoved her husband. Daniel claimed the man had tripped and fallen on his own.
Daniel was found hiding in the basement of a home on Atlantic Street NE. He was arrested on charges of felonious assault, four counts of assault, and obstructing official business. He was taken to St. Joseph Warren Hospital for his injuries and then transported to Trumbull County Jail.
On Friday, Daniel pleaded not guilty to the charges. A public defender was appointed to represent Daniel at his next court hearing on Tuesday.
Daniel's girlfriend, Mary Banks, was also arrested and charged with domestic violence after allegedly threatening her son for tackling Daniel. She pleaded not guilty to the charge.
