YOUNGSTOWN Investigators with the Mahoning County Coroner's Office were called to a shooting at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown Thursday afternoon.

Information is currently limited, but Youngstown Fire Chief Barry Finley confirmed with 21 News that the hospital is on psych diversion due to a shooting at the hospital.

This means the hospital is temporarily diverting new patients from its psychiatric ward.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting are unknown at this time, but  the Mahoning County Coroner's Office confirmed that investigators were called to the hospital in connection with a death that the Youngstown Police Department is investigating.

A statement from the Youngstown Police Department reveals that officers were called to the hospital around 11:30 a.m. for what is being described as an "isolated incident."

YPD says there is no danger to the public or patients, saying it was an isolated incident and detectives are investigating.

21 News has reached out to Mercy Health for comment, and we received the following statement:

"The safety, security and well-being of our patients, visitors and staff is a top priority for Mercy Health. An isolated incident occurred on August 28 within a contained area of St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital Emergency Department, and our team responded quickly and appropriately."

"We are actively working on an investigation with the Youngstown Police Department. Our facility remains a safe and secure environment where our teams continue to deliver compassionate care."

"Out of respect for patient privacy, we will not be providing further comment at this time."
