Lawrence County man sentenced in federal child exploitation case

PITTSBURGH - A Lawrence County man was sentenced Thursday to 17 years in prison for producing and attempting to produce material depicting the sexual exploitation of a minor.
Thomas Hyatt-Baney, 21, of Wampum, Pennsylvania, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh to 204 months in prison, followed by 15 years of supervised release. The judge also ordered a $100 special assessment and forfeiture, with restitution to be determined later.
The sentencing follows Hyatt-Baney's conviction on one count of production and attempted production of child sexual abuse material. Federal prosecutors dismissed two other counts as part of the sentencing.
Hyatt-Baney was initially indicted on July 25, 2024, on charges of producing and possessing child sexual abuse material.
According to the indictment, Hyatt-Baney produced videos depicting the sexual exploitation of a minor on or around May 28 and June 25, 2023. He was also charged with possessing similar material on or around Sept. 9, 2023. Some of the victims were under 12 years old.
The investigation was conducted by the Pennsylvania State Police and Homeland Security Investigations as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative by the Department of Justice to combat child sexual exploitation.
A hearing to determine the amount of restitution is scheduled for Nov. 17, 2025.
