Grove City students to show off shoelace invention on the Science Channel

GROVE CITY, Pa. - A device invented by two Grove City Middle School students to keep shoelaces tied will be featured on the Science Channel’s show “Tomorrow’s World Today.”
The episode is scheduled to premiere on Saturday at 10 a.m. EST on the Science Channel, with an encore presentation on the Discovery Channel on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 8:30 a.m. EST.
Olivia Adams and Samantha Priest won first place in the Inventionland National Invention Contest for their shoelace invention, “The Untie Not.” Another team of students, Ethan Cooke, Elijah Lawson, and Gavin Purdy, won second place for their “Needle Guard,” a device that prevents pump needles from breaking or getting lost.
Both inventions were selected for production, which teachers said is unprecedented for one school in a single year. Only two products from the competition have ever made it to market. Last year, the “No Cry Hair Tie,” invented by two Grove City students, was the third.
“This moment not only highlights the incredible creativity of our students but also the dedication of our teachers who empower them to dream, design, and innovate,” Grove City Middle School Principal Larry Connelly said.
The “Tomorrow’s World Today” episode was filmed during the 2025 competition. The show, a four-time Telly Award winner, partners with innovators like NASA and Microsoft.
After the new products are officially on the market, Grove City will have created three of the four student-made products to ever be produced from the competition.
“We are always impressed by Grove City students,” Victoria Farrell, director of client services at Inventionland, said.
