2000: As Youngstown State University opens its fall classes, the new president, Dr. David Sweet, is working to solidify YSU's standing in academic circles and as an economic driver of the Valley. 

Vindicator columnists Jane Tims and Nancy Beeghly, who have filled a space at the bottom of Page B1 for more than a dozen years, are writing their last columns. Tims is retiring to Virginia, and Beeghly plans to concentrate on community service. 

Two of Warren's three police captains, John Mandopoulos and Tim Roberts, will take the exam for police chief, seeking to replace Chief Albert Timko, who retired. 

 

1985: Youngstown motorists pay an average base automobile insurance premium of $547, higher than anywhere else in Ohio except Cleveland at $708.

Michael Malmer, 76, of Campbell, former head of the Youngstown Transit Co. and a transportation specialist, dies in St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he had been a patient for a week. 

Spence Management Services, owner of 13 Burger King restaurants in northeast Ohio, is opening a $300,000 regional training center on North Road in Warren. Brothers Donald and William Spence opened their first restaurant on Route 422 in Niles in 1968.

 

1975: The Campbell Board of Education gives Superintendent Robert Hedrick its full support in his plan to sue the state of Ohio over the General Assembly's recently passed plan that attempts to equalize state aid for school districts. 

Youngstown's first family, Mayor Jack C. Hunter and his wife, Pauline, welcomed the birth of a 7-pound, 1-ounce girl at St. Elizabeth Hospital. 

Three pieces of government property totaling 387 acres, all at the Youngstown Municipal Airport, are turned over to Youngstown for use in a future expansion. 

 

1950: President Harry Truman orders the seizure of strikebound railroads, which is expected to allow Youngstown steel mills to continue operations unchanged. The mills are running at 106 percent of capacity. 

Niles Mayor Edward P. Lenney names Calvin Dix as the city service director, succeeding Elmer Jones. 

Some of the nation's best flyers are expected to perform at the United Veterans Council's second annual air show at Youngstown Municipal Airport.
