CANFIELD Members of the Mahoning County Junior Fair were at the Canfield Fairgrounds on Monday, collecting non-perishable food and funds that will go towards helping the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.

The Mahoning County Junior Fair is part of the Canfield Fair, comprised of seven youth organizations in the community, including:

  • 4-H
  • Future Farmers of America
  • Campfire
  • Boy Scouts
  • Girl Scouts
  • Junior Grange
  • Farm Bureau

Just in time for the beginning of Hunger Action Month, the food drive was all part of a "stock the trailer" initiative, aiming to help those who might be less fortunate in the community.

The "stock the trailer" initiative is also part of the statewide competition, hosted by Farm Credit Mid-America, to have communities all across the state help their neighbors who may be experiencing food insecurity.

Fairgoers were encouraged to bring non-perishable food, supplies and cash donations to a trailer that was set up at the fairgrounds, located at 7265 Columbiana-Canfield Road in Columbiana.

All of the donations gathered by the Mahoning County Junior Fair Board will go towards helping support the Second Harvest Food Bank.

"All the food is going to Second Harvest Food Bank. So, when the community comes out to support [us], it is a huge help for all of us in the community," said Mahoning County Junior Fair Board President, Grace Maltonic.

The Mahoning County Junior Fair Board has collected more than 10,000 pounds of food in the last two years at the Canfield Fair.
