Fatal stabbing of inmate investigated at private prison in Youngstown

An inmate fatally stabbed a fellow inmate inside the privately operated prison in Youngstown on Sunday, according to reports from the Youngstown Police Department and the Mahoning County Coroner’s office.
Isiaha Waulk, 29, who was awaiting trial on drug and firearms charges in U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh, was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after being stabbed at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center on Hubbard Road.
According to a Youngstown police report, the incident began just before 5 p.m. on the second floor of the facility. Video footage showed one inmate, whose name was redacted from the report, stabbing at least one other person before a wider fight broke out.
The report states that Waulk was later stabbed in a "dayroom" and was severely injured. Other individuals involved were also taken to the hospital for treatment.
Court documents show the U.S. Attorney's Office filed a motion Tuesday to dismiss an indictment against him, stating the U.S. Marshals Service had informed them of his death.
An autopsy was conducted at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office. A ruling on the death has yet to be issued by the coroner. However, the Youngstown Police Report lists the investigation as “aggravated murder.”
The stabbing remains under investigation by prison staff, the Youngstown Police Department, the U.S. Marshals, and the Mahoning County Coroner's Office.
