DETROIT - Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 105,000 Mustang vehicles from the 2024 and 2025 model years due to a defect that could cause exterior lights to fail, increasing the risk of a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall affecting 105,441 vehicles.

According to the recall report, the problem stems from improperly sealed body seams in the cowl area near the windshield. This can allow water to leak into the vehicle and contact the Body Control Module (BCM), a key electronic component that manages several vehicle functions, including exterior lighting.

Water intrusion into the BCM can cause a loss of communication with the exterior lights, including the taillights, side marker lights, and license plate light. This can lead to these lights failing to illuminate as intended, making the vehicle less visible to other drivers, particularly in low-light conditions. This could also cause the lights to flicker or remain on after the car is turned off, leading to a drained battery.

Ford's investigation into the matter began in April 2025 after a 2025 Mustang experienced lighting issues during durability testing. The company noted an increase in warranty claims related to lighting and battery drain issues resulting from water intrusion into the BCM.

Ford dealers will inspect and, if necessary, seal the body seams to prevent water from entering. They will also inspect the BCM for corrosion and replace it free of charge if any is found.

Interim notification letters are expected to be mailed to owners beginning September 1, 2025, to inform them of the safety risk. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available, which Ford anticipates will be in the first quarter of 2026.
