Guns 'N Hoses Café & Catering plans to spread holiday cheer
A restaurant in the heart of Newton Falls, known for its food and community spirit, already has its sights set on Thanksgiving.
Guns 'N Hoses Café & Catering plans to continue its long tradition of doling out free meals to the community.
"Every year for Thanksgiving, we take donations, and we put together a box of everything you could possibly need to cook a Thanksgiving meal. You're going to get a turkey and all of the fixings. You're going to get everything you need to make at home with your family," said Ashley Placer, co-owner of the restaurant along West Broad Street.
Ashley Placer and her husband, Donny, have owned and operated Gun's N Hoses on West Broad Street for almost four years, but their generosity has doubled that.
"We started doing this eight years ago, and we've carried it, and we've brought some more people with us, and now we're doing it as a restaurant," Placer added.
You'll see Ashley and her family delivering these prepped meals door-to-door and, in the past, even partnering with law enforcement to give them out to folks at traffic stops.
This year they're doing it even bigger. They plan to feed 100 families, nearly double the output in years past.
"It's not just somebody that can't afford it; it's for that person that's down on their luck. You show up with a turkey... I'd cry," said an emotional Donny Placer, also co-owner at Guns 'N' Hoses.
The Placers know exactly what that feels like—Donny was hospitalized twice in the last year.
"One for sugar, one for sepsis; both times when I woke up, they were surprised I woke up," Placer explained.
It's a series of misfortunes that forced them to shut down for a time in January.
"We weren't prepared to be shut down for a month, and we did. We came back from it. Thank you to the community for that because if it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be here," said Ashley Placer.
Making the choice to upscale this holiday tradition is a no-brainer. The Placers say it will cost anywhere from $50 to $75 per family and are asking for donations.
