According to a news release from the Trumbull County Combined Health District, the first human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in Trumbull County is being reported by the Trumbull County Combined Health District.

The positive case was confirmed by the Ohio Department of Health.

According to Erin Heckman of the Trumbull County Combined Health District, the community that the resident lives in cannot be released due to HIPAA and patient privacy and confidentiality laws.

Within the release, the Trumbull County Combined Health District is reminding the community to be vigilant against being bitten by a mosquito.

Some tips that were shared include:

  • Applying insect repellants to exposed skin. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents are proven safe and effective, according to the release.
  • Wear clothing treated with EPA-registered repellent for extra protection.
  • Take extra care to use repellents from dusk to dawn.
  • Wear light-colored clothing, long-sleeved shirts or jackets and long pants to protect against mosquito bites.

In addition, it is encouraged to empty any containers where standing water may accumulate, including flowerpots, buckets, barrels, tarps and covers, wheelbarrows, tin cans, plastic containers or other similar items.

Residences and businesses within the county are also suggested to dispose of tires properly, change the water in pet dishes often, replace the water in birdbaths frequently, and keep pools clean or empty when not being used.
