Attorney calls suspension of Ursuline coach ‘overdue and incomplete’

YOUNGSTOWN A Cleveland law firm representing a student in a federal civil lawsuit against Ursuline High School is characterizing Monday's announcement from the school as “overdue and incomplete.” The announcement stated that the head football coach has been suspended, and two assistant coaches have been placed on leave.
Subodh Chandra, lead counsel in the federal civil rights lawsuit, issued a statement Monday criticizing the school's handling of the situation.
Ursuline High School had announced that head football coach Dan Reardon was indefinitely suspended and assistant coaches Tim McGlynn and Christian Syrianoudis were placed on administrative leave. The move follows a lawsuit filed on behalf of a student alleging hazing and sexual abuse during a team trip in June.
"This is as overdue and incomplete as a school assignment," Chandra said in the statement. He argued that the school's principal and assistant principal should also be placed on leave or suspended.
The lawsuit names the school, the Diocese of Youngstown, and several coaches and players as defendants.
Chandra also said that players accused of "violence, hazing, and disseminating child porn shouldn't be playing or be in school pending complete investigations, administrative and criminal."
He described the school's actions as "a smidgen of something" and "a weak first step." The law firm's investigation is ongoing, and Chandra said they continue to hear from other alleged victims and witnesses.
Ursuline High School has not shared additional information regarding the suspensions or the lawsuit.
Michael Frasco, a long-time assistant coach, has been named the interim head coach for the rest of the season. The school's statement noted that the status of the three coaches is "pending the outcomes of the ongoing investigations and litigation."
The lawsuit claims that coaches and school administrators were aware of the alleged incidents on the team trip and did not act.
The civil rights lawsuit alleges hazing and sexual assault.
