MCDONALD, Ohio - For senior citizen tenants in Woodland Park Apartments every day has been a climb, taking the stairs up and down the three story building after the elevators went out more than a month ago.

“I’m ready to jump out the window,” tenant Stephen Turner told 21 News over the phone from his third story apartment.

Turner lives in one of the 42 units and uses a wheelchair. He said he hasn’t been able to go outside since the elevators went out.

“The problem is I have doctor's appointments, kidney doctor, foot doctor...I have a catheter. I've canceled that. I’ve cancelled four or five appointments,” Turner said.

Stephen and his wife, who uses a walker, have been relying on the family to get her necessities. They're hearing it could be a few more weeks of just sitting around.

The elevator and the fire alarm both went out when lighting hit the building in an early August storm. The landlord has fixed and updated the alarms but the elevator is proving to be more challenging.

“I do know that parts are a concern, they're having a hard time getting the parts, the electrical parts that they need to get the elevator up and going,” Chief Fred Marcum of the McDonald Fire Department said.

“It's an elevator they're waiting on parts. It's not like you can just go to a store down the street,”  Mayor Ray Lewis of McDonald said.

Chief Marcum said his department is willing to help people get up and down the stairs to get to their appointments. Tenants can call the non-emergency line at 330-675-2730.

Mayor Lewis added that the landlord is offering to move people down to the first floor for more accessibility.

“I am of the belief that it is their number one priority to get that elevator up and running,” Mayor Lewis said.

Chief Marcum said the elevator being out will not impact their response to an emergency situation like a fire because tenants would not evacuate in the elevators anyway. He said they have a surplus of mutual aid to contact if tenants needed to be brought out all at once.

21 News reached out to the building manager who had no comment. We also left messages with the landlord to see when this elevator could be fixed and they did not respond.
