LISBON A Columbiana County grand jury has secretly indicted a Wellsville man on a new felony charge of possessing a deadly weapon while under detention. The latest indictment comes as E’mory Chiles’s attorney has filed a notice of self-defense for a separate attempted murder case.

The latest indictment, unsealed last week, alleges that in late July, Chiles possessed a metal shank while in the Columbiana County Jail.

Chiles, 20, was arrested on the new charge on Friday. A judge set his bond at $50,000, and he is scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 29.

This is the second indictment for Chiles this year. He was previously indicted on June 4 in connection with an April 27 incident in Wellsville, where a juvenile was shot.

Police told 21 News that a male juvenile was shot in the wrist along 18th Street near Nicholson Alley.

In that case, he faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence, and inducing panic. The attempted murder and felonious assault charges each include a firearm specification.

Court records show that Chiles' defense attorney filed a notice of self-defense on Thursday in the attempted murder case. The notice states that Chiles intends to "offer evidence of self-defense" and will provide information on the alleged victim's conduct.

The filing also states that the defense will offer evidence of the criminal records of any witnesses called by the state.

A jury trial for the April charges is scheduled for Oct. 14 in Judge Scott A. Washam's courtroom, with a status conference set for Oct. 1.
