2000: Elizabeth Kobly, former city prosecutor, is sworn in as a Youngstown Municipal Court judge after being appointed by Gov. Bob Taft to replace Andrew Polovischak.

C. Alan Stephan, a member of the state financial oversight commission and a retired Navy captain, is the newest member of the Youngstown Board of Education, filling the seat vacated by Don L. Hanni III, who resigned. 

Mollie McGovern of Boardman, a University Scholar at Youngstown State University, is appointed by Gov. Bob Taft as a student representative on the YSU Board of Trustees. 

 

1985: Three prisoners were back behind bars within hours after escaping from the Columbiana County Jail through an unlocked door that led to an exercise area.

There are clear signs that the strength of minority rule in South Africa is breaking down, says Dennis Brutus, a South African academic hired to lead the black studies department at the University of Pittsburgh. The Reagan administration attempted to remove him from the country by refusing to renew his visa, but he was granted political asylum in 1983.

1975: Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge David McLain refuses to dismiss a suit filed by county Treasurer Carl Lupi that seeks to block Lupi's removal from office because he failed to secure a $13 million bond. 

General Motors launches its long-awaited counteroffensive against hot-selling imports by unveiling its mini-car, the Chevrolet Chevette. 

A birthday celebration ends in death for Bonnie Mae Root, 19, of Newton Falls, who fell from a dock at Lake Milton and drowned in eight feet of water. 

 

1950: United Nations troops storm ashore at the port of Inchon and begin a push behind North Korean lines, fighting their way to Seoul, the fallen South Korean capital. 

Production at General Electric Co.'s Youngstown Lamp Works will resume after the company and the union reach an agreement that halted nationwide production. 

Okey Scarberry becomes the second man in 14 years in Mahoning County to receive alimony. Judge Henry Beckenbach awards him $100 a month.
