LISBON An honors program at a school in Lisbon has been awarded a mini-grant from the Columbiana County Mental Health and Recovery Board, according to a Wednesday news release.

The David Anderson Jr. Sr. High School issued a news release on Wednesday that outlined what the school's National Honor Society (NHS) program had received the award for.

Students within the David Anderson Jr. Sr. High School NHS program and their advisor, Lisa Baker, applied to the mini-grant in 2024, aiming to display encouraging messaging around the school on bathroom stall doors.

NHS Seniors Kady Dunn and Abby Ammon commented in the release on the goal of the project.

Dunn said in the release," Seeing the signs with encouraging words helps us take a step back and stay positive."

Additionally, Ammon added, " Instead of staring at a blank space, we're looking at positive works that could impact our day for the better."

The NHS group was awarded $826 to cover all 24 stall doors in the boys' and girls' restrooms at the school.

Sign holders were installed on the stall doors that will be used for messaging related to healthy lifestyles, suicide prevention and other positive messages.

"One goal of mine was to brighten up the restrooms and add positive messages for the students. When I saw the grant advertised, I thought this was a great way to get the funding for the project," said Baker.

This project launches a series of initiatives that the NHS plans to complete at David Anderson Jr. Sr. High School during the year, including:

  • Assisting the Lisbon Lions Club in making apple dumplings for the Johnny Appleseed Festival
  • Assisting McKinley Elementary's PTO at their Spring Fling event
  • Organize the NHS Induction Ceremony
  • Organize the annual NHS Honors Banquet
