CANFIELD  Denise DeBartolo York and her family are on the latest Forbes 400 list of the richest families in America.

The Debartolo Yorks, who own a $3.5 million mansion on gated property at the end of Pebble Beach Drive, are ranked No. 163 on the Forbes 400 list, with a net worth of $8.4 billion. The fortune is primarily connected to the family's ownership of the San Francisco 49ers football team, according to Forbes.

The Forbes list, which was published this month, notes that the 400 wealthiest individuals in the United States have a collective worth of $6.6 trillion. The article states that a net worth of $3.8 billion was the minimum required to qualify for a position on the list this year.

The York family holds more than 90% ownership of the San Francisco 49ers, a team that Forbes identifies as the NFL's sixth-most valuable franchise. The team was the Super Bowl runner-up in 2023.

Denise York’s father, Edward DeBartolo Sr., originally purchased the franchise for $13 million in 1977. He also owned the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins, and Denise York served as the Penguins' president in 1991 when the team secured its first Stanley Cup.

York, 74, took control of the 49ers in 2000 from her brother, Edward Jr. Her oldest son, Jed York, is the current CEO of the team. Denise York is married to John York, a pathologist who founded DeYor Laboratories in Youngstown before the company was sold to Corning.

The family's wealth has seen a notable increase over the past decade. According to Forbes wealth history data, their net worth was $1.9 billion in 2016 and had risen to $3.2 billion by 2020. In 2023, the family also finalized their takeover of the English soccer club Leeds United, paying more than $200 million to acquire the remaining 56% stake.

The family's involvement in sports ownership began with their patriarch. Edward DeBartolo Sr., who died in 1994, built a business empire that included real estate and shopping malls. Denise York's first job after college was establishing the human resources department for the family company.

The family's financial standing, as reported by Forbes, places them among the 507 richest people in the world.

The DeBartolo Yorks rank higher on the Forbes 400 than some other well-known billionaires, including fellow sports magnate Mark Cuban, whose ownership of the Dallas Mavericks contributes to his $6 billion worth, with a rank of 246 on the list.

The local billionaires outrank motion picture mogul Stephen Spielberg, whose $7.1 billion fortune lands him at 208 on the Forbes list. The Yorks are even richer than President Donald Trump, who doesn't even make the top 200, ranking 201 with a reported worth of $7.8 billion.

The Yorks first made the Forbes 400 list in 2018 when their net worth had accrued to $2.5 billion.
