After nearly six months of being closed, Insight has announced that it plans to reopen Insight Hospital & Medical Center Trumbull following a review by the Ohio Department of Health.

A statement from Insight indicates that the reopening will be done in phases, with the initial reopening phase seeing the hospital offer a 24-7 emergency department with both inpatient and outpatient services.

From there, the hospital plans to expand from this initial phase in response to the community's needs.

"We're grateful for the tremendous cooperation that has brought us to the pivotal point of soon reopening Trumbull as an Insight non-profit hospital. The staff, nurses and doctors are the heart of the hospital, and employees are receiving communications about their potential return," the statement reads.

No official date was given as to when the hospital could potentially reopen, but a source tells us they hope to have some employees back to work by Wednesday.

Additionally, 21 News has obtained a copy of a letter sent to members of the hospital's union surveying furloughed employees about whether they want to come back to work at the hospital once it reopens.

Options given include returning to work in their previous position, returning to work in any position in which they are qualified, not being interested in returning to the hospital and resigning, or resigning due to finding employment somewhere else.

Chrissy Lewis, coordinator for SEIU 1199, said this is one of the few times hearing from Insight since the closure six months ago.

"I have been contacting insight on a almost daily basic trying to get information, usually with no kind of response. When we do get a response, it's usually after the public already knows," said Lewis.

Lewis said while she is excited, she still has concerns.

"I wasn't sure we were going to get to this point, so the fact that we are at this now, and looking at potential starting dates, and hopefully the whole hospital opening very soon is a very positive thing," said Lewis. "We’re all a little gun-shy. We would be crazy not to be given everything that we’ve been through over the last six months and the way the closing happened, it kind of does leave a sour taste in your mouth."

Tom Connelly, who represents the hospital nurses, said he has not heard from Insight since their meeting a month ago.

He worries getting nurses back to the hospital will be a challenge, since no deal was made with employees and many got other jobs.

Mayor Doug Franklin sent a statement regarding the plans to reopen the hospital:

"I am optimistic about the reopening of Insight Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren. Our community deserves strong, reliable care—I’m praying this new chapter lives up to the promise.
I'd like to thank the insight representatives as well as the union leadership for working together and keeping me informed throughout the process."

The Department of Health is expected to visit the hospital Tuesday, September 23.
