YOUNGSTOWN - A student is recovering in the hospital after suffering a gunshot wound on Saturday evening near Youngstown State University's Stambaugh Stadium.
According to a Facebook post by Cardinal Mooney High School, one of its students was wounded and was immediately taken to the hospital.
Cardinal Mooney's Principal Brendan Considine says the student is in stable condition and is recovering.
Police are still investigating the circumstances behind the incident.
Officers on duty with the Youngstown State University Police Department heard what they believed was a gunshot around 9:20 pm Saturday. Officers responded to the south end of the stadium, where they encountered two juvenile males assisting another juvenile male limping with his right leg up.
Officers approached the victim and asked if he had been shot, but the juvenile replied that he had twisted his ankle and was not shot, according to a police report on the incident.
The officer continued looking for a suspect or any victims when he got a radio call about a person bleeding on Armed Forces Blvd. near the stadium.
The officer now saw the limping juvenile seated on a bench with blood coming from his right knee. The officer asked the child if he knew who shot him and he responded, 'No,' according to the police report.
An ambulance was on scene and transported the victim to the hospital at 9:23 pm.
Officers spoke with the Cardinal Mooney student at the hospital and told officers that he thought he had twisted his ankle, only to realize later he had been shot. He stated he was a spectator at the game and that he was not carrying a weapon or a gun and that he "is not beefing with anyone," the report stated.
The student also told officers that while he didn't know who shot him, he also didn't remember the names of his friends who were helping him down the ramp, his cell number but did give officers his mother's name.
The YSU officer told the injured student if he remembers anything or has a question to contact the Youngstown Police Department, according to the report.
The social media post on the incident also states, "At Cardinal Mooney, we place the safety and security of our students as the highest priority. We join everyone involved in expressing our prayers for healing for our entire school family and our community."
A football game between Cardinal Mooney High School and Chardon High School was held at Stambaugh Stadium beginning at 7 p.m.
At 9:39 p.m., a YSU Penguin Alert was sent out to avoid the stadium and stated "There was an incident but the situation is under control."
