SHARON A Valley native is giving back to his hometown friends who are looking to move the Shenango Valley Animal Shelter to a new, bigger building.

Shenango Valley Animal Shelter Chair Ken Hubert tells 21 News Youngstown native Ken Cooper, who is friends with former Shenango Valley Animal Shelter Board of Directors member Duane Piccirilli, is matching all donations towards the new building dollar for dollar now until Thanksgiving.

Hubert says the shelter is looking to raise $50,000 for the new building. Cooper matching all of those donations will double that number to $100,000 raised.

According to a notice on the shelter's website, the total cost to finish out the interior of the new building is $750,000.

Hubert says the shelter's current building is small, dates back to the 1960s and only houses 22 small kennels, which is not enough to house all the dogs they've taken in.

Hubert tells 21 News the new shelter will house 54 larger kennels. The building will also have a better drainage system, which could lead to healthier living conditons for the animals, larger play areas for dogs and cats and a Sally port, which will allow law enforcement to drop stray animals off after hours.

Currently, the shelter has raised $11,640. You can donate via PayPal or Venmo. Links and information on how to donate, as well as a tracker to monitor the shelter's progress, can be found on the shelter's website.
