Local union taking legal action against Insight Hospital
WARREN, Ohio - A local union of 150 workers from Insight in Warren is taking legal action against the hospital's owners.
As Insight has been trying to reopen, some members of the Service Employees International Union have been getting calls asking them if they want to come back but union reps say it hasn’t been going according to their contract. Members in the lab and imaging departments haven't been called in order of seniority and at least one person was told the job would require a 10 percent cut in pay from their previous salary before the hospital closed.
Now, SEIU District 1199 plans to file with the National Labor Relations Board for direct dealing and violation of their contract.
“Some people are very, very angry and how can you trust an employer who treats you like this who treats the community like this,” Chrissy Lewis, a union rep from SEIU District 1199 said.
Unionized nurses have also been getting calls to come back. They’re hearing Insight needs to fill 10 positions in the emergency department. Union reps were not sure if any of the spots had been filled.
The search for staff is coming before the hospital has the green light to reopen. The hospital was inspected by the Ohio Department of Health Tuesday morning and needs a stamp of approval to open the doors.
We reached out to Insight officials Tuesday for the results of the inspection and did not hear back.
SEIU is planning to send Insight a letter with demands Tuesday and are asking for negotiations since their contract ended in July. The union is also considering taking a vote to picket this Friday.
“This is not the workers that are doing this, this is Insight and we're going to fight to make them respect our community and our workers,” Lewis said.
Some staff members were being told to report to the hospital Wednesday at 8 a.m. for orientation but late Tuesday night they were notified that it was postponed indefinitely. No reason for the change was given to employees.
Insight responded to 21 News’ request for comment with the following statement:
"We are happy that everything is getting up and running and now we will be obtaining third party verification for some of the regulatory matters. We're thankful for the partnership with elected officials and government agencies who have assisted with overcoming obstacles and helping us move forward rapidly. We are exercising an abundance of caution, as our team and patient safety is our priority. We anticipate opening as soon as that is completed."
Unemployment benefits for furloughed employees ends on Friday, September 26.
