YOUNGSTOWN Youngstown City Council is reviewing legislation that would authorize spending $155,000 on new handguns and associated equipment for the city's police department.

The ordinance, if approved during next week’s meeting, authorizes the city's Board of Control to enter into an agreement with Vance Outdoor of Columbus for the purchase of 150 Glock Model 45 pistols.

According to the Glock website, Model 45 used the design and engineering that the arms maker developed for its military pistol, combined with operator and worldwide Law Enforcement specifications.

The standard magazine holds 17 rounds of 9 mm ammunition.

The purchase would also include related accessories: holsters, optics, and lights, in addition to ammunition for training and qualification targets.

City officials introduced the ordinance, stating the emergency is necessary to authorize the Board of Control to approve the purchase order, which they claim is for the "immediate preservation of the public peace, welfare, and safety."

The proposed purchase is intended to equip and train officers with the new model pistols, replacing or supplementing existing sidearms.

The legislation specifies that funds for the purchase are available in the police department's operating supplies budget.

The measure is being presented to the council as an emergency measure. If it receives the required affirmative vote from six council members, the ordinance will take effect immediately upon passage and approval by the mayor. If it does not pass as an emergency measure, it would take effect at the earliest period permitted by law.
