YOUNGSTOWN  First responders, including police detectives and the coroner, responded to a scene of what was reported to be an accident involving a pedestrian on Youngstown's South Side.

Dispatchers were first told that someone was trapped after a crash on Loveland Road near Pointview Avenue at around 10:30 a.m. Monday.

When firefighters arrived, they reported that no one was trapped, but it appeared that a person had been struck by a car and that the victim was seriously injured.

The 21 News crew could see what appeared to be a body covered with a sheet in a nearby front yard. Police on scene confirmed that one man was killed.

The Mahoning County Coroner's Office released a statement on Tuesday identifying the victim as 53-year-old Joseph Novacich.

An autopsy was conducted at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office.

"The poor guy was just walking, just coming from where ever he was coming from and enjoying this beautiful day and now he's dead you just never know when your time is up,” TJ Elmo, who witnessed the incident said.

Security cameras from a business across the street captured the incident. The man can be seen walking in the road and tries to jump out of the way as an SUV speeds towards him.

The man was thrown several feet and the car ended up coming to a stop two houses down. Witnesses said the SUV had heavy damage but the driver backed out of the yard and then took off down the street.

"The guy looked at me right as he was speeding off and he didn't look like he was okay at all," Elmo said.

Loveland Road was shut down in the area, and police scene tape had been stretched across the road.

The Mahoning County Coroner was dispatched to the scene shortly after 11 a.m. Officials confirmed with 21 News that one person has been arrested in connection with the crash about a mile away from the scene.

People in the area say this is a dangerous intersection where the road bends even though there's flashing lights.

"Right were the car went through there's usually a bunch of kids right there at that corner house …obviously it's terrible but it could've been even way worse if those little ones were all out there," Elmo said.

Police have not released any information on possible charges for the suspect.

The incident remains under investigation by the Youngstown Police Department and the Mahoning County Coroner's Office.
