SHARON Mercer County is stepping up its efforts to improve local infrastructure for active transportation, including walking, biking, and using mobility aids. As part of a preparation initiative, the county, in partnership with several state and regional organizations, will host a free public workshop on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Penn State Shenango Auditorium.

The event, "Mercer on the Move: Active Transportation Workshop," is a key step in the county’s plan to apply for funding early next year from the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s WalkWorks Program. This funding is aimed at developing a formal active transportation plan to improve public health through environmental design.

The workshop, which includes a complimentary lunch, is hosted by PA WalkWorks, the Pennsylvania Downtown Center, and local organizations, including the Shenango Valley Area Transportation Study/Mercer County Regional Planning Commission. It will offer attendees a chance to learn about existing amenities in the region and, more importantly, provide feedback that will shape the county's future planning efforts.

Mercer County was selected for the Justin R. Lehman Community Capacity-Building Pre-Planning Assistance Program, which supports municipalities in understanding the planning process and preparing strong grant applications. This focused effort will position the county well to secure funding and quickly begin work on a plan tailored to local needs.

All community members are welcome to attend. Information and registration for the free event can be found at bit.ly/ruralATinPA.

The pre-planning program is projected to result in a $3,000 increase to any future WalkWorks planning grant the county receives.
