Man in critical condition from accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound in Boardman Wednesday

BOARDMAN An employee at a Boardman business is in critical condition after suffering an accidental gunshot wound to the head Wednesday afternoon.
According to a police report, the incident happened at a store on Stadium Drive, less than half a mile away from Boardman Center Intermediate School.
Police say an employee picked up a handgun found behind the counter, put it up to his head and said, "Say I won't do it," and accidentally fired the gun. One of the man's co-workers told police the man was not suicidal and claimed that the man had been known to be reckless with guns in the past, according to the police report.
The man was taken to the hospital, where he told nurses he was not suicidal and that he fired the gun by accident. He was last reported to be in critical condition and is undergoing surgery.
This incident caused Boardman Center Intermediate School to be locked down for a short time. A spokesperson for the district told 21 News the lockdown happened right at dismissal time and only lasted about 10 minutes.
